MXT448UD-HA and MXT640UD-HA enrich Microchip's functional safety certified capacitive maXTouch® touch screen controller series, meeting the needs of screens larger than 10 inches.
Networked home appliances allow users and manufacturers to communicate with them via the Internet. For example, users of kitchen ovens can search for new recipes online, and manufacturers can implement remote diagnosis or update firmware through over-the-air download technology. Display screens and touch sensors are essential to realize this function in modern appliances. Microchip Technology Inc. today announced that its touch screen controller series that has passed IEC/UL 60730 Class B certification has now added two new members, MXT448UD-HA and MXT640UD-HA. The new product can expand the scope of application of the B-level product portfolio to more than 10 inches. It is a special solution for larger screen sizes. At the same time, customers can also adjust it according to their needs.
In addition to complying with Class B specifications, the new device also complies with IEC61000-4-6 Class A specifications, and the conducted noise immunity is as high as 10 Vrms (Class 3 for industrial use). This allows products with a touch screen interface to operate in very harsh factory environments, where conveyor belts, power cords, or assembly machinery may cause electromagnetic interference. Home appliance manufacturers will benefit from increased reliability and production efficiency. Compared with consumers using unprotected touch screens on ovens or washing machines, this is a major improvement, because unprotected power transmission, electromagnetic interference from motors and nearby electrical equipment may cause false touches or missed touches.
The new touch screen controller is also equipped with two serial interfaces (SPI and I²C), which can run at the same time, through the integration of security functions, such as separate communication between the touch screen controller and the host microprocessor (MPU) and a secure microcontroller (MCU) , Allowing redundancy in the design. Touch events are provided to both processors at the same time. This unique structure shortens the time to market and reduces development costs because it allows all safety-critical firmware to be developed on a safety-certified dedicated MCU (compulsory source code review by the IEC/UL testing laboratory), Separate from the main processor that runs the device's graphical user interface (GUI).
Clayton Pillion, Director of Microchip's Human-Machine Interface Business Unit, said: "As products add more control through touch screens, the interface must work reliably to meet user needs and protect users. maXTouch® technology has excellent noise resistance and can be used throughout life. Operate safely and steadily during the cycle. We have worked closely with our customers to launch the first series of functional safety touch controller products, which have a high adoption rate in scenarios where noise immunity is critical to the success of the product."
In addition to complying with IEC standards, the MXT448UD-HA and MXT640UD-HA series also support operating temperatures up to 105°C. This is a key requirement for cooktops and ovens where the human machine interface (HMI) system is close to the heating element.
development tools.
Microchip provides software to support these new controllers, including maXTouch Studio (development tool) and maXTouch Analyzer (production terminal test/check tool). In addition, a universal ATEVK-MXT640UD-A evaluation kit (EVK) is also provided. Customers who specifically need the functional safety version of the evaluation kit for household appliances can contact Microchip.
