LONDON – EDA software vendor Cadence Design Systems Inc. (San Jose, Calif.) has announced it has paid approximately $80 million to acquire Sigrity Inc. (Campbell, Calif.), a supplier of signal, power and thermal integrity analysis software and IC package design tools. The acquisition was completed on July 2.
Cadence said it will offer Sigrity technologies immediately as add-on options to its Allegro and Orcad PCB and IC packaging tools. Cadence said it will support Sigrity technologies where they has been incorporated into third-parties' design software.
The combination of Cadence and Sigrity tools would enable system and semiconductor companies to deliver high-performance devices employing gigabit interface protocols such as DDR and PCI Express, Cadence said.
"Cadence and Sigrity have worked together for years to enable design and analysis of the industry's most advanced PCBs, system-in-packages, and SoCs," said Jiayuan Fang, president of Sigrity, in a statement issued by Cadence.
Sigrity began operations in 1997 with an award from the National Science Foundation to help it develop a hybrid electromagnetic field solver for multi-layer electronic packages and boards. The company now has more than 100 employees with greater than 60 percent engineers working in R&D.
