LONDON – Sales revenue at United Microelectronics Corp. (Hsinchu, Taiwan) continued to climb in August, following a trend that has continued for several months and that is starting to indicate that the foundry could yet record sales growth for the year.
UMC's August sales were NT$9,799 million (about $330 million), up 19.5 percent on the same month in 2011 and up 1.9 percent on sales in July 2012.
In the first eight months of 2012 UMC has sold NT$70,797 million worth of wafers (about $2.38 billion), which is 3.4 percent down on sales in the first eight months of 2011.
The third quarter is usually the strongest quarter in sequential growth terms while the fourth quarter is usually flat to a few percent down. However, Intel has revised its 3Q12 sales estimate downwards due to weak demand and TSMC has advised that it expects a revenue downturn in the fourth quarter.
